Sidewalk Responsibility

Sidewalks are the property owner’s responsibility to maintain, NOT the city’s.

Reporting an unmaintained sidewalk

  1. Report the sidewalk with a photo to Memphis 311 using their website or by calling 311 directly.
  2. The city will contact the property owner to request a repair. If necessary, they will be given a notice to repair, giving them 30 days to arrange the work.
  3. If the notice to repair is not sufficiently met, then the matter will proceed to Environmental Court, which can take an additional 90 days for a secondary notice and another 30 days for the City to complete the repairs.
I am still in the process of following one of these requests, so this is all I know right now…
